(6) I’m discovering something strange; I think my posting of nothing but links is actually increasing the hits to this site through trackbacks.
(7) In other news, I’m thinking of doing a fake posting on eHarmony to see what sort of strangeness I pick up. Any votes for that or suggestions for other activities are welcome.

People who complain about walmart are hypocrites, 9 times out of 10. I’m not saying that walmart isn’t evil. Walmart mistreats it’s employees, I don’t doubt that. But I have a proposition to proove my point that the complainers are usually hypocrites. Next time you’re going to go shopping, go to walmart. Keep track of what you buy, and what you would have paid at another store. Now take the difference. Give this difference to the cashier as a tip.
I don’t know anyone who does this. Usually the people that dislike walmart say they choose to shop elsewhere, using the boycott theory to try to make walmart treat their employees better. This doesn’t work. In fact, the whole idea of boycotting companies rarely works in these scenarios. Here’s why: People are selfish.
I don’t propose a solution. Neither do I avoid shopping at walmart. Perhaps there should be laws protecting the employees, perhaps not. Perhaps we can use the money we save at walmart to help people that are actually starving in other countries. I’ve degenerated into rambling now… but am I the only one that finds it odd to see the same people who talk about labor laws turn around and complain about outsourcing? Oh no! People in poor countries are transcending the class structure and obtaining wealth!
Maybe there is a bit of unity to my ramblings after all: People are selfish, and somehow expect that other people will be selfless. That’s just dumb. Walmart is out to maximize profits. The general population is out to maximize the amount of stuff they can buy. You can’t just tell people “Stop being selfish” because it simply doesn’t work.

[23:00] Tim__gas: so i have an odd idea
[23:00] Tim__gas: during the winter
[23:00] ducks__drug: ….
[23:00] Tim__gas: when you have thermostats set to keep your house at a specific temperature
[23:00] Tim__gas: and you turn your computer on
[23:00] Tim__gas: and it’s generating a lot of heat
[23:00] ducks__drug: …
[23:00] ducks__drug: mhm
[23:00] Tim__gas: but your house stays at the same temperature
[23:01] Tim__gas: and you have electric heating
[23:01] Tim__gas: net effect…. running the computer is free in terms of power
…
[23:02] Tim__gas: if your computer’s on
[23:02] Tim__gas: and it’s “using” energy
[23:02] Tim__gas: it has to go somewhere
[23:02] Tim__gas: so it all goes to heat
[23:02] Tim__gas: i assume
[23:02] ducks__drug: so that leads to the following:
[23:02] ducks__drug: all electricity use is free
…
[23:03] ducks__drug: all electricity use is free for eskimos*

A lot of design work goes into constructing features–extra options that are crafted to make things easier to use and/or give the user more power. Of course, as many examples will show, having extra features may not actually make things easier, and furthermore it may not give the user any more power, as we can see from one example:
